Hazy conditions with wildfire smoke over the mountains

Forest Floor does not currently have any weather-related delays or cancellations.

Weather Policy

At Forest Floor, we believe that diverse weather conditions provide ripe opportunities for nature connection, and we strive to get out to share the woods in all sorts of weather.

We refer to the Weather Underground app for the most accurate weather predictions.

That said, safety is always a priority for our community. If extended lightning events, unsafe road conditions, tornado warnings, or sustained winds above 45 mph are predicted,  we may need to cancel or delay programs.

Otherwise, if our instructors can safely travel to programs and we can safely run our shuttles as planned, we generally go ahead with programs. We trust individual families to make the best and safest choice for their children and we support whatever you choose. Please consider road conditions on your individual route and your child’s disposition as you make your decision.

You can find up to date announcements on this page, and we will email parents by 8am on the day of the program if a change needs to be made.

Cold Weather

We enthusiastically embrace cold, rain, and snow and require appropriate dress for all program participants. It is rare for Asheville to dip into temperatures that would be cold enough to be dangerous, and we are lucky to live in a time with awesome gear available to support our outdoor adventures in all temps! Please refer to this free guide from our friends at Outdoor School Shop for tips and contact us if you need help finding appropriate clothing. Proper materials are key to your child’s safety and comfort, so please choose waterproof outer layers and wool or synthetic base layers. If your child doesn’t want to wear a hat or gloves, just require them to put them in their backpack. When in doubt, pack an extra layer! And a warm drink or soup in a thermos is always a welcome treat on a cold day.

Air Quality

In the event of wildfires or other events that affect air quality, we may make changes to our programs.
– If the Air Quality Index is rated101-150, programs will go on but with reduced physical activity.
– If the Air Quality Index is rated above 150, programs will be canceled.
We use AirNow, a US government service, to monitor AQI.

Make Up Days

In the rare case that we have to cancel programs because of severe weather, we do offer a make-up day for the children in the programs affected, within the same season. Parents will be contacted by email with more info if this applies.
